Today is my birthday. My wife had been asking me what I wanted to do, and I really had no idea. Well, I came across this color sketch yesterday, which I had illustrated last summer. We had taken our children (ages 4-10 at the time) to the drive-in last summer, and I wanted to take them, because they had never yet experienced going to one. While we were waiting for the film to start, we just sat there in the back of the SUV. I was enjoying the colors of the twilight sky, listening to the train whistles in the background, and it was one of those moments I wanted to preserve. I didn’t have a camera with me, so as soon as we got home (which was pretty late after a double-feature at the drive-in, as you might imagine), I jumped on the computer and did this quick color sketch, which is pretty much exactly how things looked from the back of our vehicle. Anyway, after coming across this sketch, I decided I want to go to the drive-in for my birthday. Yeah, it’s not the kind of fancy-shmancy event most people would choose for their birthday, but being out with my wife and kids, enjoying these simple pleasures is what I treasure the most. It’s what my kids will remember most. And that’s all that matters.
